Cougar Clubbing (Analysis of Poem Included)

Flashing strobe lights

Bodies moving

Reaching new heights

Dancing, grooving

Loose gyrations

we’re not thinking

Strong libations

we are drinking

Music pulsing

Bass is beating

Speakers shaking

Air is heating

Rhythms rocking

Flesh is burning

Limbs are talking

Hearts are turning

Faces kissing

Tongues are swirling

Reason’s missing

Minds are whirling

Hungry touching

Passion’s trending

happy that the

night’s not ending

Analysis:

  • action is evident throughout the poem, given by the numerous verbs used (all the words that end with “ing”)
  • noise is evident
  • images of a bunch of people on a crowded dance floor, both male and female
  • age of these people is not evident, but can be interpreted as varying, since “cougars” are older women who like younger men
  • each line has four syllables
  • colours evident are darkness with flashing lights
  • title is not literal (no one is hitting animals over the head with clubs) but can be interpreted as women being hit over the head – which leads to social acceptance or rejection of the concept of older women with younger men
  • temperature is one of warmth
  • sound is one of loudness
  • a bar scene is being described

What else can you add to this analysis?
