Nothing Left

There’s nothing left to eat
In cupboards that are bare,
But I won’t admit defeat.

No choice, I’m on the street.
Please have you change to spare?
There’s nothing left to eat.

I thank God for summer heat.
I’ve nothing left to wear,
But I won’t admit defeat.

People stumble in retreat.
I’m begging while they stare,
There’s nothing left to eat!

Sleep’s not an easy feat
With dreams gasping for air,
But I won’t admit defeat.

I must find a way to cheat
Both hunger and despair.
There’s nothing left to eat,
But I won’t admit defeat.

The Challenge

How to write a villanelle:

  1. Create a rhyming couplet that can be repeated throughout the poem:
    • There’s nothing left to eat,
      But I won’t admit defeat.
  2. The villanelle consists of 19 lines with five three-line stanzas and one four-line stanza.
